Building Science Basics: Understanding the Effects of Heat, Air, and Water

Henry Gifford has helped design and oversee construction of about 80 energy efficient buildings, none of which have cost more to build than normal code-minimum construction.

In this presentation, Henry will discuss the movement through buildings of heat, air, and water (in its various forms), and how a change in the flow of one of these three things changes the flow of the others. Buildings readily show the effects of unmanaged flows and Henry will demonstrate how to see them and control them. He will tie together how these flows determine occupant comfort, occupant health, building durability, and energy efficiency.

The discussion will cover building design problems that are common in North America, and explain approaches that can solve these problems, including approaches that are commonplace in other parts of the world. His discussion will include human comfort, building enclosure design, and how to greatly simplify mechanical systems.

Henry Gifford
Henry grew up solving energy related problems with buildings. As a long time building owner, mechanical contractor and expert designer, he understands the different perspectives of a good design. Henry has a deep understanding of and respect for the physics and science behind building systems. This strong foundational knowledge, in combination with his practical experience, enables him to create designs that measurably save energy and money. Henry currently works at the award winning architecture firm of Chris Benedict, RA.
